INCONTINENCE LEARNING CENTER
One way to help manage the incontinence of a loved one is using an underpad. Incontinence underpads are waterproof pads that you place on top of your sheets of your bed or on a chair to help the surface stay dry. Underpads come equipped with an extra strong backing to reduce the likelihood of rips from movement. The backing also helps prevent fluids from leaking through the back of the underpad, maintaining an additional level of support and protection as a result.
Some factors to consider while choosing Underpads:
Underpads come in different absorbency levels depend on the amount of leakage. Most incontinence underpads, both reusable underpads and disposable underpads are available in moderate to heavy protection.Moderate absorbency pads provide a high level of protection and are the most common preferred solution. Heavy or super absorbency pads are needed if there is a lot of leakage. Heavy absorbency under pads are also ideal for overnight use.
There are two common styles of incontinence underpads, adhesive and winged.
Adhesive underpads, such as Depend® Bed Protectors, stick to sheets with a tape on the underside of the underpad to stay in place. These work by peeling off the adhesive protector and placing the underpad in position. This helps prevent the underpad from moving out of place during sleep or movement.
Winged underpads have wings on each side that allow an individual to tuck the underpad between the mattress and the box spring. Winged underpads, such as Attends Tuckable Underpads, are ideal for a lot of movement as they offer greater protection and stay in place better than adhesive underpads.
Disposable underpads are absorbent and the most convenient option for an incontinence underpad. Once soiled, simply dispose of the underpad. This alleviates clean up and laundering of pads. Several brands of disposable underpads such as Attends underpads and Prevail underpads offer cloth-like top sheet to provide comfort.
Washable underpads, also known as reusable underpads, are just as absorbent as disposable underpads, but instead of throwing them away when they are soiled, an individual can simply wash them. This is a more economical choice than a disposable underpad. Reusable underpads such as Beck’s underpads, often have a white quilted layer to help protect your skin and protection with vinyl backings.
