Oximetry & Spirometry

Simply Medical carries oximetry and spirometry devices and accessories for all your needs.

Oximetry

What is Oximetry?
Oximetry is defined as “a method that utilizes spectrophotometry to measure the oxygen saturation of circulating blood or a localized region of tissue by means of an oximeter.”

What is an Oximeter?
A pulse oximeter, also known as pulse ox, is an electronic device that measures the saturation of oxygen in your red blood cells.

Simply Medical offers various pulse oximeters for use at home. These devices are an easy way to measure oxygen levels. The pulse oximeter attaches to your finger and emits two wavelengths, making for comfortable and non-invasive use. Some designs measure your blood oxygen level as well as your current pulse rate.

One best-selling model features a bright LED display with large digits so that you can easily read its results. It is maintenance-free for your convenience and comes in a small size that is easy to carry around with you, whether you're a healthcare worker, athlete, or have respiratory issues. This portable oximeter also includes a lanyard so that you can easily attach it to your body.

Another pulse oximeter available on Simply Medical comes in the form of a wellness ring. The Prevention circul+™ Wellness Monitor Ring continuously and accurately monitors health metrics like heart rate, blood oxygen, finger temperature, heart rate variability, single lead ECG and blood pressure. In Sleep Mode, nighttime blood oxygen monitoring and recording captures blood oxygen levels, heart rate, ODI and sleep stages. When daytime monitoring, you can track your heart rate, steps, and calories burned during workouts, or your blood oxygenation and heart rate. Sleek, lightweight, and durable, this ring comes in three adjustable sizes from small to large to extra-large.

Spirometry

What is a Spirometer?
An incentive spirometer is a handheld medical device used to measure breath volume. The device determines the amount of air you breathe in and out. It also measures the exact time it takes to exhale the air after taking a deep breath.

Spirometers are typically utilized at hospitals after prolonged illnesses or surgical procedures resulting in long bed rest periods.

Using a spirometer to breathe slowly enables your lungs to inflate fully. Deep breaths help break up and clear fluid in the lungs that could cause pneumonia.

Who Might Benefit from an Incentive Spirometer?
Here are some of the common conditions that may require the use of a spirometer:

  • After surgery: An incentive spirometer helps keep lungs active during bed rest to lower the risks of developing conditions such as pneumonia, bronchospasms, and respiratory failure
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD): COPD is a respiratory disorder commonly caused by smoking. Using a spirometer could help manage symptoms of COPD.
  • Pneumonia: An incentive spirometer can help people with pneumonia to break up mucus buildups that accumulate in the lungs
  • Other conditions: A doctor may also prescribe an incentive spirometer for people with asthma, sickle cell anemia, or atelectasis.
How to Use an Incentive Spirometer
Before using an incentive spirometer, it is vital that you understand the specific instructions for using the medical device. The following are general usage protocols:

    1. Sit upright on the edge of your bed or chair
    2. Hold the spirometer in a vertical position, and breathe out normally
    3. Put the mouthpiece of the device in your mouth and seal your lips around it
    4. Breathe in through your mouth slowly and deeply. Ensure the piston or ball rise to the top of the chamber
    5. The next step is to hold your breath for about 3 to 5 seconds or longer if you can
    6. Use the goal indicator to guide your breathing. Slow your breathing down whenever the indicator goes beyond the marked areas
    7. Remove the mouthpiece and breath out normally to allow the piston or ball to return to its original position
    8. Take a brief rest before repeating the steps ten or more times
After completing each set of 10 deep breaths, cough to clear your lungs of any mucus build-up. You should also clear your lungs throughout the rest of the day.
